It lies 15 miles (24 km) east of Washington D.C., and 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Baltimore. It sits on a site of 523 acres (2.12 km┬▓), 131 of which is currently used for park operations.

The park’s history dates to 1973, when Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot and a pair of Irish animal trainers first proposed a wildlife preserve on more than 400 acres (1.6 km┬▓) of corn and tobacco fields. ABC television later bought out Perot and his partners and opened The Largo Wildlife Preserve in 1974, projecting 850,000 visitors a year.

The initial projections that were expected never materialized. ABC bowed out two years later, citing massive losses. The park was then closed for several years and then reopened as a water park in 1981 as Wild World. It featured a number of water slides and a wave pool, with just a couple of dry rides ΓÇö a Ferris wheel, giant swings, teacups, and the like. When Boston’s Paragon Park closed in 1985, the Giant Coaster ΓÇö which had operated there since 1917 — was moved to Wild World, where it was renamed the Wild One and began service in 1986. cont – Wikipedia

On June 30, 2006, Cedar Fair announced it completed the acquisition of Paramount Parks, including Great America. The transaction includes licensing agreements with Nickelodeon and Paramount, providing the park the option to retain its Nickelodeon and Paramount theming for several years.

On October 25, 2007, Cedar Fair announced the park will be renamed California’s Great America and that it would also receive a 14 million dollar investment over the next two years. With that announcement, the park also announced the addition of a new flat ride called FireFall, a new wooden roller coaster to debut in 2009 to be made by Great Coasters International, a new ice show in the newly renamed “Great America Theatre” (formely The Paramount Theatre), and bringing the Halloween Haunt event to the park next year. – Wikipedia

It was situated at the northern edge of a vast industrial complex developed by Hunt in the bluffs above the Missouri River in Clay County, Missouri. Immediately south of the park is Hunt’s SubTropolis underground business complex.

At the time, numerous modernization projects were transforming Kansas City including the opening of Kansas City International Airport, Bartle Hall and Kemper Arena. In 1976, a new section opened for America’s Bicentennial called Bicentennial Square. Three mascots also accompanied Worlds of Fun in the early days: Sam Panda, Grrrtrude the Lovable Gorilla, and Dan’l Coon.

In 1982, ten years after Worlds of Fun’s opening, Oceans of Fun (at the time the largest water park in the world) opened next door. However, it would take another ten years before the two parks were linked. – Wikipedia

In 1968, Roger Jourden purchased the park and began selling off the deer and purchasing attractions, eventually renaming it Deer Park Funland. In 1988, Jourden added the Wolverine Wildcat roller coaster. At this time, he changed the name to Michigan’s Adventure. In 1991 he opened WildWater Adventure, a water park. The park was bought by Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. in 2001 and has become a major Michigan attraction. Michigan’s Adventure is the only surviving thrill park in the state of Michigan. (Boblo Island park, west of Amherstburg, Ontario near Detroit, was closed in 1993. Although in Ontario rather than Michigan, it is often thought of as the last of the Detroit parks.)
