Bethpage State Park is best known for its five world-class golf courses, including the world-renowned Black Course which was the site of the U.S. Open Championship in 2002 and will again host the U.S. Open in 2009. When the South Course of Oakland Hills was formally opened on July 13, 1918, it already enjoyed a certain degree of prestige. After all, the course was designed by the foremost golf course architect of his day – Donald Ross and the Club had engaged, as its first professional – Walter Hagen who had already won the United States Open. The enjoyment of country club life in those days was pretty well restricted to the golf course. The “Clubhouse” was the Miller farmhouse on the North side of Maple Road and the old chicken coop served as Walter Hagen’s pro shop. Memberships were sold to 140 members at $250.00 each. – Official Site

Even in it’s early days the club was open to players of all skill levels. The 1934 club president John Drake was quoted saying “Whether a man shoots 75 or 125 makes no difference. Every one not only is welcome, but has an equal opportunity for enjoyment and sharing in the prize awards. All Club events are designed to care for the high handicap players as well as the better shooters”. That continues today with all club events contested by handicap giving all who participate an equal chance of winning if he has his ‘A’ game on that day. – Official Site

Perhaps the most enticing stretch of holes begins at the par-4 15th through to the finish. Weibring and Gray achieved a stadium feel and look that is common to many TPC designs, but they did it without moving much earth. The holes, including two long par-4s, cut through the trees and a ravine, making for a natural stadium golf setting. – Official Site

Congressman Oscar E. Bland and O.R. Lubring of Indiana, founders of the Club, set out to provide an informal common ground where politicians and businessmen could meet as peers, unconstrained by red tape. They took their idea to Herbert Hoover, then Secretary of Commerce, who agreed to serve as Founders’ Club President and, from 1922-1923, Honorary Founding President of a soon-to-be-built Congressional Country Club. Primarily because of the determination of these original two visionaries, the Club was incorporated in December 1921. Construction of the Club took two and one-half years from concept to completion. During early 1955 some people at Flint Golf Club began talking about the idea that there should be another private golf club in the Flint area. Demand for membership at the Flint Country Club was already greater than the facilities available. Therefore, late in 1955 or early 1956 on a Saturday afternoon, a group of five men met at Chuck KellyΓÇÖs house on Blanchard in Flint to start the wheels in motion to build another private golf course and club. These five were: Chuck Kelly, Homer Strahle, Bill Gregor, Ed Titus and Vic Ryden. Also present was attorney Bob MacDonald. – Official Site

Recently renovated Torrey Pines South Course boasts dramatic coastline views as well as some of the most challenging golf in the country. In 2001, renowned golf course designer Rees Jones set his signature upon the course and the accolades on his work have not stopped since. This is our first shot at a Virtual Earth 3D flyover – Augusta Golf Course. Most of the information is from PGA.com, so if it looks familiar, it is. Each hole has a picture associated with it – the hole name – some interesting facts about the hole.

TPC Southwind opened as a private member golf club in March 1988. The par 71, 18-hole championship golf course was designed by Ron Prichard with PGA TOUR Player Consultants Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller. PGA Tour: Muirfield Village Golf Club Aerial View

Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of Jack Nicklaus. The land was acquired in 1966, but construction did not begin until July 28, 1972. The golf course is situated on 220 acres, which includes an 11-acre driving range. The course was officially dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Nicklaus scored a six-under par 66, which stood as the course record until 1979. – PGA Site

The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial golf tournament is the longest running event on the PGA Tour still being held at the original site (since 1946). The players of today know they are competing on the same hallowed ground as the great Ben Hogan won the championship five times in his hometown.
