Designed by Ghanan Jean Foncin in 1798 and named after James McHenry, a Scots-Irish immigrant and surgeon-soldier who became Secretary of War under President Washington, Fort McHenry was built after America won its independence to defend the important Port of Baltimore from future enemy attacks. It was positioned on the Locust Point peninsula which juts into the opening of Baltimore Harbor, and was constructed in the form of a five-pointed star surrounded by a dry moat ΓÇö a deep, broad trench. The moat would serve as a shelter from which musketmen might defend the fort from a land attack. In case of such an attack on this first line of defense, each point, or bastion, was fortified, so that the invading army would be caught in a crossfire of cannon and musket fire.┬á Fort McHenry – Wikipedia

The submarines of the Tench class were an improvement over the previous Gato and Balao classes due to better interior machinery and ballast tank arrangements. Twenty-nine were completed for the United States during, or immediately following WWII, though most never made a war patrol. Of the twenty-nine completed, only two, TORSK and REQUIN, still exist within the United States. For many years it was customary to name U.S. submarines for fish, although this custom no longer exists. World War II submarines were named for everything that swam, from Albacore to Whale. Since opening on Sept. 30, 1950, when Maryland defeated Navy 35-21 in the dedication game before a school-record crowd of 43,386 fans, Byrd has undergone a number of major facelifts, three of which occurred in the 1990s and have resulted in its present form. The first came shortly after the 1990 home season, when the Tyser Tower press box – a fantastic five-tier, 90-foot high, 160- foot long structure – was built on the stadium’s south rim. Six Flags America

The park’s history dates to 1973, when Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot and a pair of Irish animal trainers first proposed a wildlife preserve on more than 400 acres (1.6 km┬▓) of corn and tobacco fields. ABC television later bought out Perot and his partners and opened The Largo Wildlife Preserve in 1974, projecting 850,000 visitors a year.

The initial projections that were expected never materialized. ABC bowed out two years later, citing massive losses. The park was then closed for several years and then reopened as a water park in 1981 as Wild World. It featured a number of water slides and a wave pool, with just a couple of dry rides ΓÇö a Ferris wheel, giant swings, teacups, and the like. When Boston’s Paragon Park closed in 1985, the Giant Coaster ΓÇö which had operated there since 1917 — was moved to Wild World, where it was renamed the Wild One and began service in 1986. cont – Wikipedia

Constructed on 70 acres west of the Jones Falls, the Maryland Jockey Club purchased the land for $23,500, and built the racetrack for $25,000 after MarylandΓÇÖs Governor at the time, Oden Bowie, suggested the interesting proposition during a dinner party in Saratoga, New York in 1868. Bowie and his friends, prominent racing figures, had agreed to run a race in two years commemorating the evening, for horses that were yearlings at the time. – Official Site
